There are two airports for arrival: Nice, about half an hour away, and Cannes-Mandelieu for private aviation, minutes from the centre. The car can wait for you at the terminal, your hotel or the Vieux-Port. During the Festival the Croisette and the streets around the Palais are closed or restricted, so agree the handover point in advance.

Between events Cannes is an excellent base for driving: Cap d'Antibes fifteen minutes away, the Corniche d'Or through the red rocks of the Esterel towards Saint-Raphaël and, to the north, Grasse and the Route Napoléon, climbing through hairpins to Castellane.

Some French cities run low-emission zones (ZFE) that require a Crit'Air sticker, foreign-registered cars included. The rules have changed several times: check the current status before driving into Paris or the Nice metropolitan area, and order the sticker only from the official site certificat-air.gouv.fr.
Speed limits: 130 km/h on autoroutes (110 in rain), 80 or 90 on two-way country roads depending on the département, 50 in town.
Most autoroutes are tolled (péage, cards accepted). Under the Loi Montagne, from 1 November to 31 March winter tyres or chains on board are compulsory in the mountain communes that apply it, the Savoie ski resorts included.
