Two rules matter before you set off. Motorways and expressways need a vignette, digital or sticker, and the Brenner motorway and the Tauern and Felbertauern tunnels charge a separate toll on top. From 1 November to 15 April winter tyres are compulsory whenever roads are wintry, which makes a Porsche Cayenne or Land Rover Defender the natural choice for the ski season. Limits are 130 km/h on motorways, 100 outside towns and 50 in town.

Book early for the Salzburg Festival, from late July to late August, when opera and concert-goers fill the city.

Vienna opens onto the vineyards of the Wachau, the reed shores of Lake Neusiedl and the curves of the Semmering and the Rax. Innsbruck is the gateway to Kitzbühel, the Zillertal up to Hintertux and the Achensee, and a Lamborghini Urus handles all three in any season.
