Discover Munich
Inside the Mittlerer Ring the city is a low-emission zone, and every car, foreign-registered ones included, needs the green sticker. The roads that make the car worth it start south of the city: the Tegernsee and the Kesselberg hairpins down to the Walchensee within an hour, Garmisch-Partenkirchen under the Zugspitze, the Chiemsee and, further east, the Rossfeld road above Berchtesgaden. In wintry conditions German law requires winter tyres: for the mountains, choose a four-wheel-drive car fitted with them.
Demand peaks from late September to early October with the Oktoberfest, and in odd years the IAA Mobility show comes just before it: if your dates are fixed, book early to secure the model you want.
