Not every great Tuscan road needs a supercar. The Futa pass, on the SS65 north of Florence, is narrow in places, with tight hairpins between the woods where a wide Lamborghini feels cramped. The white AMG A45 S is the opposite: a compact five-door hatchback that fits the road perfectly and still has 421 hp from its 2.0-litre turbo to pull out of every bend.
All-wheel drive with 4MATIC+ keeps it planted when the Apennine surface turns damp under the trees, and the dual-clutch gearbox makes the climb towards the Raticosa effortless. Respect the 90 km/h limit outside towns and the car is still entertaining. For a shorter outing, the eight-kilometre climb to Fiesole is a fine sunset run, and the A45's small footprint makes the narrow lane near the top easy.
Its size helps everywhere in Tuscany, from car parks outside Siena's walls to farmhouse courtyards.
