Late autumn is when the Turbo S makes most sense around Florence. The tourist crowds thin out, the Apennines turn copper above the Mugello valley, and the roads north over the Futa and Raticosa are quiet. They are also cold and often wet, which is where 711 hp would be a problem in most cars and is not in this one: all-wheel drive and winter tyres, fitted in the cold season and required on signed roads from 15 November to 15 April, keep the black coupé planted.
The numbers are extreme, 0-100 km/h in 2.5 seconds and 322 km/h, but on Italian roads the limits are 130 km/h on the motorway, 110 in the rain, and 90 on country roads, so what you actually use is the way the twin-turbo flat-six pulls from low revs out of every hairpin. It is a two-seater, calm enough to drive to Bologna on the A1 and back for dinner, and just as happy on the SS65 alongside it, the old Mille Miglia road.
If you are in town for the Florence Marathon in late November, note that many streets in the centre and along the Arno close for the whole morning. The centre inside the viali is a camera-controlled ZTL year-round in any case: ask your hotel to register the plate for its garage, or have the car delivered to Firenze Peretola, Santa Maria Novella or Pisa Galileo Galilei.
