About this car in Florence
Lucca is an hour west of Florence on the motorway, and arriving there in an open Turbo S is a fine way to start a day on the coast. Park outside the Renaissance walls, walk the ramparts, then carry on to the Versilia, where the beaches between Viareggio and the resorts further north sit beneath the marble-white Apuan Alps. With the hood down, that is one of the great Tuscan views from a car.
This is the open version of the most powerful 911, with the twin-turbo flat-six, all-wheel drive and the PDK gearbox. The traction matters more than the headline power on Tuscan roads, which are often narrow and can be greasy after a summer storm. Two seats and a front boot for a medium suitcase and a small one make it a weekend car for a couple. On another day the SR222 Chiantigiana is a gentler, slower outing between the vineyards of Greve and Castellina. Winter tyres are fitted in the cold season, so a bright February day can still be spent open.
When you get back to Florence, remember the centre inside the viali is a camera-controlled ZTL. If your hotel is inside it, the hotel can register the plate for its garage; otherwise the car can be delivered to and collected from Firenze Peretola, Pisa Galileo Galilei or Santa Maria Novella. The handover is arranged at booking.

Drives from Florence, the best months and when to book
Suited to this car
- Fiesole (about 8 km from Florence): The climb through San Domenico to Fiesole, with its Roman theatre and the view over the whole of Florence: the shortest outing, perfect at sunset.
- Siena and San Gimignano (about 70 km from Florence): The motorway link to Siena and Piazza del Campo, then the medieval towers of San Gimignano among the Vernaccia vineyards; both old towns are limited traffic zones, so you park outside the walls.
- Bolgheri and the Etruscan Coast (about 140 km from Florence): Towards the sea to the Viale dei Cipressi, five kilometres of cypresses from San Guido to the village of Bolgheri, among the wineries of the great Tuscan reds.
Best months for this car
The best time for a convertible in Florence is June: highs around 28 °C and no more than 5 rainy days a month. In July–August highs exceed 31 °C: drop the roof in the morning and evening.
