The Mille Miglia crossed the Apennines north of Florence on the road that is now the SS65, over the Futa and the Raticosa, and a red sports car on those bends still looks as though it belongs there. This 911 Carrera GTS coupé has 480 hp from its twin-turbo flat-six, all-wheel drive and a 3-second sprint to 100 km/h, but on the passes its real qualities are the steering, the brakes and a chassis that tells you precisely what the tyres are doing. The limit is 90 km/h, and the road is best enjoyed early on a weekday morning.
The coupé body is stiffer and quieter than a cabriolet, which you appreciate on the long way back along the A1 or when the Apennine weather closes in. If the day is short, the climb through San Domenico to Fiesole is the alternative: a short run of bends from the city, and the view over Florence at the top.
Winter tyres are fitted in the cold season and are compulsory on signed Apennine roads from 15 November to 15 April, so with all-wheel drive the 911 stays usable all year.
