Siena is about an hour from Florence on the motorway link, and with four passengers the trip is far nicer in a cabin of white leather than in a crowded train. The metallic blue Urus S seats five, and its 666 hp twin-turbo V8 makes light work of the hilly road out to San Gimignano afterwards, where the medieval towers rise among the Vernaccia vineyards.
Both old towns are limited traffic zones, so you park outside the walls and walk in; the Urus's cameras help in the tight car parks. Plan carefully around 2 July and 16 August: those are the days of the Palio in Piazza del Campo, Siena is fully booked and the roads around it are packed. The 454-litre boot takes the luggage for a week, and with all-wheel drive the gravel lanes to an agriturismo near San Gimignano are no worry.
In Florence the centre is a camera-controlled ZTL. A hotel inside it can register the plate for its own garage; otherwise we deliver to Firenze Peretola, Pisa Galileo Galilei, Santa Maria Novella station or a villa in the hills, as arranged when booking.
