Start with the light. At 1,800 metres the sun is reflected off snow from below as well as from above, and colour behaves differently here. The white SE almost disappears into the landscape, which photographers book it for; the Verde Mantis SE is the opposite, the most conspicuous car on the frozen lake, chosen for launches and shoots. The metallic blue Urus S with white leather keeps the cabin bright on grey days, and the matte Nero Nemesis Pearl Capsule, with body-coloured details, shows its finish best in this hard mountain light.

In January the Snow Polo World Cup is played on the frozen lake, in February the horses of White Turf race on it, and the cars lined up at the edge are as concentrated a display as anywhere in Europe. The SE hybrids add something practical: the last stretch back to the chalet at two in the morning can be done in silence.

Driving a luxury car in St. Moritz: what to know
- From Milan the usual route runs via Chiavenna and the Maloja pass, open all year; the Julier also stays open in winter, while some higher passes, such as the Albula, close from autumn to spring.
- Swiss motorways require the annual vignette (sticker or e-vignette), foreign cars included: without it the fine is immediate. Ask us whether the car already has one.
- Limits: 120 km/h on motorways, 80 outside towns, 50 in town. Swiss speeding fines are among the highest in Europe and serious excesses are a criminal offence. Headlights must be on by day.
- Switzerland is outside the EU customs union: keep the rental contract and your documents to hand at the border.
