The Umbrail pass, at 2,501 metres, is the highest road pass in Switzerland, climbing from Santa Maria in Val Müstair to meet the Stelvio just below its summit. Combined with the Ofen pass from Zernez it makes a summer loop of narrow tarmac and tight hairpins that suits a small, balanced car far better than a big one.
The Boxster is that car. The engine sits in the middle, the 300 hp turbo four pulls it out of hairpins cleanly, and with rear-wheel drive and a roof that folds in seconds it is pure summer driving. Two boots, front and rear, hold 300 litres between them.
