How to choose the best luxury car rental company: 10 things to check

26 October 2026 · 9 min read · Team IsyLuxe

Search for "best luxury car rental company" and every result looks the same: the same black Urus, the same Ferrari on a coastal road, the same promise of "premium service". From the outside, there is no way to tell them apart. The difference shows only when something does not go to plan, and by then you have already paid.

So do not judge a rental company by its photos. Judge it by its answers. Below are the 10 questions we would ask any luxury car rental company before booking, including us. For each one you will find what typically goes wrong, the exact question to ask, what a good answer sounds like, and how we answer it at IsyLuxe.

1. Can I read the terms and conditions before I pay?

What goes wrong: the contract appears only at handover, on a tablet, while the driver waits and the car is running. You sign without reading because everyone is in a hurry. Weeks later, a charge arrives that "was in the contract".

A good answer: "Yes, here they are, and we will walk you through them." Terms should be published and explained before payment, not discovered after.

How we answer: every clause is explained before you sign, and everything we agree, even on chat, is written into the Booking Confirmation: car, dates, total price, deposit, included mileage, cost per extra kilometre, pick-up requirements and cancellation policy. Nothing is hidden.

2. What exactly am I paying, and when?

What goes wrong: the price grows message by message. Delivery is extra. Then a "service fee". Then the deposit turns out to be twice what you expected. A process that is not transparent at the start rarely becomes transparent later.

A good answer: a clear breakdown before you pay, with the total price, the confirmation deposit, the security deposit and the cancellation terms.

How we answer: all of these figures are in the Booking Confirmation before you pay. With our standard policy you can cancel with a full refund of the confirmation deposit up to 5 days before the rental starts.

3. How does the security deposit work?

What goes wrong: cash handed over in a car park, a transfer to a private account, no written rule on when the money comes back. This is where most disputes in luxury rental begin.

A good answer: the amount is shown before booking; it is a pre-authorisation on a card in the driver's name, not cash; the release time is written down; and you know how it relates to the excess.

How we answer: the deposit is shown on every car's page before you book. It is a hold, not a charge, released immediately or within 48 hours of return. Cash is never accepted. The excess equals the deposit, so you always know your maximum cost. More in our guide to the luxury car rental security deposit.

4. Which clauses could cost me money?

What goes wrong: the expensive clauses are rarely in the headline price. A tight mileage limit with a high cost per extra kilometre. A fuel rule you did not notice. Fines with an administration fee. An insurance exclusion that turns a covered accident into a full bill.

A good answer: the company points them out to you, one by one, instead of waiting for you to find them.

How we answer: we go through mileage, fuel, fines and restricted traffic zones, additional drivers, cross-border travel and insurance exclusions before you sign. We have written them all down in our guide to the luxury car rental agreement.

5. Will I receive exactly the car I booked?

What goes wrong: "Lamborghini Urus or similar". You booked the car in the photo; you receive an older model, a different version or another colour. For a wedding or an event, that is the whole point lost.

A good answer: "Yes, that exact model", with a way to prove it.

How we answer: every car on IsyLuxe has a unique vehicle code that links the booking to the car delivered. You receive the model you booked, not a similar one.

6. What does the insurance actually cover?

What goes wrong: "insurance included" on the website, and silence when you ask what that means. Third-party liability is mandatory everywhere; cover for damage to the car, theft and fire is where companies differ.

A good answer: the specific covers for the car you chose, the excess, and the exclusions, in writing.

How we answer: insurance is included in the price, the covers for your car are stated in the agreement, and for covered damage your liability is limited to the excess. We tell you clearly when the protection does not apply: an unauthorised driver, driving under the influence, lost keys or track use.

7. Whose side are you on if there is a dispute?

What goes wrong: many luxury rental websites are only a showcase. They pass your booking to the car's owner and step aside. When there is a disagreement over damage or the deposit, you are negotiating alone with the person who holds your money.

A good answer: "We handle it with you."

How we answer: we work with suppliers, the companies that own the cars, and we stay on the customer's side. If there is a dispute, for example contested damage or the release of the deposit, we follow the case with you until it is resolved.

8. Is this car really available for my dates?

What goes wrong: a price that looks too good, a car that becomes "unavailable" as soon as you ask, and a "similar" alternative at a higher price. It is a classic bait tactic, and it wastes the time you need to book something else.

A good answer: a written confirmation for that car and those dates.

How we answer: the booking is confirmed in writing, for a specific car on specific dates. Our fleet of supercars, SUVs, convertibles and vans is delivered to hotels, villas and airports in cities across Europe.

9. What happens if something goes wrong during the rental?

What goes wrong: a warning light on the motorway, a car that arrives late without a call, a car that is not in the condition promised. Without a defined remedy, you get an apology at best.

A good answer: a concrete process: replacement, refund or compensation, and support you can reach at any hour.

How we answer: a car with a problem is replaced with one of the same or a higher category. Report an issue within 24 hours of delivery and we assess it straight away, with a replacement, a partial refund or compensation depending on the case. Support is available 24/7. The details are on our Customer Protection page.

10. Who is the company behind the website?

What goes wrong: an anonymous profile, a phone number and a payment link. When something goes wrong, there is no one accountable.

A good answer: a registered company with a name, published terms and real contact details.

How we answer: IsyLuxe is a registered company in Italy, with published terms and conditions and a team you can reach 24/7.

Red flags: when to walk away

  • A cash-only deposit, or a transfer to a private account.
  • No written contract, or one you only see at handover.
  • "That car or similar", with no guarantee on the model.
  • Insurance nobody can explain.
  • A price that changes after you share your details.
  • Pressure to pay before you have read the terms.

The checklist in one minute

  • Can I read the terms before paying?
  • Do I know the total price, the deposit and the cancellation terms?
  • Is the deposit a card pre-authorisation with a written release time?
  • Have the costly clauses been explained to me?
  • Will I receive exactly the car I booked?
  • Which insurance covers apply to this car?
  • Who is on my side in a dispute?
  • Is the car confirmed in writing for my dates?
  • What happens if the car has a problem?
  • Who is the company behind the website?

A company that answers all ten clearly is a company you can trust. Still deciding whether to use an agency at all? Read why book with a luxury car rental agency. Or browse the IsyLuxe luxury car rental fleet and put our answers to the test.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a luxury car rental company the best?

Not the photos or the size of the fleet, but the guarantees: clear terms, a transparent deposit, no hidden clauses, the exact car you booked, explained insurance, someone on your side in a dispute and a real remedy if something goes wrong.

How do I know if a rental company is trustworthy?

Check that it is a registered company, that it explains its terms before you pay, that the deposit is a card pre-authorisation and that everything you agree is written into a contract.

Should I accept "or similar" in a booking?

For a luxury car, ask for a guarantee on the exact model. With IsyLuxe every car has a unique code linking the booking to the car you receive.

What is a normal deposit for a luxury car?

It depends on the car: the more valuable it is, the higher the deposit. What matters is that the amount is shown before booking, that it is a pre-authorisation and that the release time is written down.

What should happen if the car I receive has a problem?

A good company replaces it with a car of the same or a higher category, or offers a refund or compensation. At IsyLuxe you report it within 24 hours of delivery, and support is available 24/7.
