Two people book the same Lamborghini Urus for the same weekend. The first books it from a private owner found on Instagram. The second books it through a luxury car rental agency. On Friday morning, one of them is standing outside a hotel waiting for a car that is "running late", with €10,000 blocked on a credit card and a contract that exists only as a WhatsApp chat. The other is already driving.
The car was the same. What was different was everything around it. In this guide we go through the six problems that most often ruin a luxury car rental, why they happen, and how a serious agency prevents each one. We also show how we handle them at IsyLuxe, so you can hold us to the same standard.
Problem 1: the car that arrives is "similar"
You booked a specific model, version and colour, often for a reason: a wedding, an event, a photo shoot, a car you have wanted to drive for years. On the day, something else turns up. An older model year. A different version. Another colour. Sometimes another car altogether, with an apology and a promise that it is "even better".
This happens because many operators sell a category, not a car. The listing shows the best car in the fleet, and the booking says "or similar" in small print. When the car you saw is already out, they send whatever is free.
How we do it at IsyLuxe
Every car on IsyLuxe has a unique vehicle code that links your booking to the car delivered. You receive exactly the model you booked, not a "similar" one. If you booked the Urus in that version and that colour, that is the car that arrives.
Problem 2: the agreement exists only in a chat
Price, mileage, delivery time, deposit, who can drive: everything is agreed in a friendly conversation on WhatsApp or Instagram. It feels fast and flexible, until something goes wrong. Then you discover that "we said 300 km" and "I never said that" weigh exactly the same, because nothing was ever written into a contract.
A chat is not a contract. It does not define liability, it does not list exclusions, and it does not protect you when the other side remembers things differently.
How we do it at IsyLuxe
You can talk to our team on chat, but the agreement is never "just a chat". Everything you agree is written into the Booking Confirmation, which you can sign electronically: car, dates, total price, deposit, included mileage, cost per extra kilometre, pick-up requirements and cancellation policy. Before you sign, every clause is explained to you. Nothing is hidden in small print you discover later. That document is what protects you.
Problem 3: "it's insured" (but nobody can tell you how)
Ask a private owner about insurance and the answer is usually "it's insured, don't worry". Ask what that means, and the answers get vague. Which covers? With what excess? What if the car is stolen? What if a friend drives it for ten minutes? Most people find out the real answers only after an accident, which is the worst possible moment.
How we do it at IsyLuxe
Insurance is included in the price, and the covers that apply to your car are stated in the agreement. For covered damage, your liability is limited to the excess, which equals the security deposit: you know your maximum cost before you book. We also tell you clearly when that protection does not apply, for example an unauthorised driver, driving under the influence, lost keys or track use. We explain every clause in our guide to the luxury car rental agreement.
Problem 4: the deposit you are not sure you will see again
Deposits on luxury cars are high, and that is normal: the cars are expensive to repair. The problem is how they are handled. Cash handed over at a petrol station. A bank transfer to a private account. No written rule on when the money comes back, or on what can be deducted. When the deposit is not returned, you have nothing to point to.
How we do it at IsyLuxe
The deposit is a pre-authorisation on a card in the driver's name: a hold, not a charge. The amount is shown on every car's page before you book. It is released immediately or within 48 hours of return. Cash is never accepted. And because the excess equals the deposit, you always know the most you can lose. All the details are in our guide to the luxury car rental security deposit.
Problem 5: when something goes wrong, you are on your own
The car has a warning light on the motorway. It arrives late and nobody called. At return, the owner points at a scratch you are sure was already there. In every case, the only person you can call is the same person you are arguing with. There is no one in the middle, and no rule about what happens next.
How we do it at IsyLuxe
We work with suppliers, the companies that own the cars, and we stay on the customer's side. In practice:
- Replacement: if the car has a problem, it is replaced with a car of the same or a higher category.
- Refund or compensation: report an issue within 24 hours of delivery and we assess it straight away, with a replacement, a partial refund or compensation depending on the case.
- A dispute with the supplier, for example contested damage or the release of the deposit: we follow the case with you, instead of leaving you to negotiate alone.
- 24/7 support: a real team, reachable at any hour, every day.
The full commitment is on our Customer Protection page.
Problem 6: the car you wanted is never really available
A single owner has one or two cars. If they are booked, damaged or simply not where you need them, your plans change, often at the last minute. And the websites that show a huge fleet at very low prices often turn out to be bait: the car becomes "unavailable" as soon as you ask, or the price rises once you have shared your details.
How we do it at IsyLuxe
We give you access to a fleet of supercars, SUVs, convertibles and vans, delivered to hotels, villas and airports in cities across Europe. The booking is confirmed in writing, for that car and those dates. You choose the car you want, not the one that happens to be free.
Agency, private owner or app: what really changes
- The car: guaranteed by a unique vehicle code, instead of "or similar".
- The agreement: a written Booking Confirmation with every clause explained, instead of messages.
- Insurance: covers and excess stated before you sign, instead of explained after an accident.
- The deposit: a card pre-authorisation with a written release time, instead of cash.
- When things go wrong: replacement, refund or compensation and someone on your side, instead of a negotiation.
When booking directly can still make sense
To be fair: if you know the owner personally, you have rented from them before and you sign a proper contract with clear insurance and a card deposit, booking directly can work. The question is not "agency or private". It is what guarantees you have before you pay. If you cannot answer the six points above, an agency is the safer choice.

Frequently asked questions
Is it more expensive to book through an agency?
Not necessarily. Compare what is included, not just the daily rate: the exact car, a written contract, insurance, a transparent deposit and a remedy if something goes wrong. A cheaper rental without these often costs more when something happens.
Will I receive exactly the car I booked?
With IsyLuxe, yes. Every car has a unique code that links the booking to the car delivered.
What happens if the car breaks down during the rental?
Call our team, available 24/7. The car is replaced with one of the same or a higher category, or the issue is resolved with a partial refund or compensation depending on the case.
Who holds the deposit, and what if there is a dispute?
The supplier holds it as a pre-authorisation on a card in the driver's name, released immediately or within 48 hours of return. If there is a dispute, we follow it with you.
Is a WhatsApp conversation enough as an agreement?
No. With IsyLuxe, everything agreed in chat is written into the Booking Confirmation, the contract that protects you.
