Most people pick their airport for Courchevel on one thing: the most convenient flight. Yet that choice shapes everything after landing: how long the drive is, whether you cross Swiss motorways, and where the car is waiting for you. This guide compares the five ways in: Geneva (GVA), Lyon Saint-Exupéry (LYS), Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc (CMF), Grenoble Alpes Isère (GNB) and the Courchevel Altiport. It also explains how a luxury car handover works on arrival, whether at the terminal or at your chalet.
In short
- Closest by road: Chambéry, about 100 km and 1h15 to 1h30 from Courchevel 1850 in normal traffic.
- Most flights: Geneva and Lyon, both about 2 hours away (176 to 179 km according to the resort).
- Most direct: the altiport at 2,007 m above Courchevel 1850, for private flights, air taxis and helicopters only.
- One shared final leg: every road route ends via Albertville, the RN90 to Moûtiers and the climb on the D915 and D91A.
- Winter equipment: France's Loi Montagne applies in Savoie from 1 November to 31 March. Every IsyLuxe car runs on winter tyres in the cold season.
- Handover: in the arrivals area, at Geneva's French sector, at a station or straight at your chalet, as agreed when you book.

Geneva (GVA): the default choice, with two exits
Geneva is the most used airport for Courchevel simply because it has the most international flights, scheduled and private. Its quirk is that it sits on the border and has two sides. The French sector is reached by road through the Ferney-Voltaire customs road and puts you straight onto the French network; you cannot cross between the sectors on foot, and only passengers with a same-day ticket can switch inside the building (Geneva Airport). After an international flight you normally come out on the Swiss side.
So for luxury car hire at Geneva Airport for Courchevel, there are two scenarios:
- Handover on the Swiss side: the easiest for you, as you walk out of the main terminal. The fastest route uses the Geneva motorway bypass to the border, which needs a valid Swiss motorway vignette.
- Handover at the French sector: useful if your flight arrives there, or if you would rather stay on French motorways from start to finish.
The turn-by-turn drive (A41, A43, tolls, the Annecy alternative, vignette) is covered in our guide Geneva to Courchevel by car in winter, so we will not repeat it here. To book on the Geneva side, see luxury car hire in Geneva.
Lyon Saint-Exupéry (LYS): the big French hub
Lyon airport lies east of the city, right on the road to the Alps. You are on the A43 within minutes, towards Chambéry, then Albertville and the A430. It is motorway all the way to Albertville, with no border and no vignette, which makes it a relaxed option for a late arrival. The resort gives about 176 km and 2 hours to Courchevel in normal conditions.
Lyon also suits travellers who pair skiing with a city break: a night in Lyon before heading up, or a return through the city at the end. Airport information is on lyonaeroports.com, and our local offer is on luxury car hire in Lyon.
Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc (CMF): the closest
Chambéry airport sits on the shore of Lac du Bourget, just north of the town. It is the shortest way in by road: about 100 km, or 1h15 to 1h30 in normal traffic, on the A43 to Albertville and then the RN90. It is a very seasonal airport: in winter it handles seasonal scheduled flights, ski charters and a lot of business aviation, with a clear weekend peak (Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc Airport).
For many guests it is the ideal place for luxury car rental at Chambéry Airport for Courchevel: the terminal is small, the handover is a short walk from arrivals, and the road is short. One caveat: most flights land on Saturday, exactly when the Tarentaise valley is busiest, so a short drive on paper can stretch a lot. Our luxury car hire in Chambéry page shows the models on offer.
Grenoble Alpes Isère (GNB): the seasonal option
Despite its name, Grenoble airport is at Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs, around 40 km north-west of Grenoble. It works mainly in winter, with seasonal routes largely from the UK (Grenoble Alpes Isère Airport). For Courchevel, allow about 175 km and just over 2 hours via the A48, the A41 towards Chambéry, then the A43 and A430 to Albertville. It makes sense if your flight lands there; it does not save time over Geneva or Lyon.
Courchevel Altiport: landing next to the slopes
Courchevel has its own airfield, the Michel-Ziegler altiport, at 2,007 m above Courchevel 1850. The runway is 537 m long with a slope of up to 18.5%; it is cleared of snow all winter, and about 70% of winter movements are helicopters (Courchevel town hall). The field normally opens from 9am to 7pm, with no night flights.
It is not an airline airport: you arrive by private aircraft, air taxi or helicopter from the larger airports in the region. Pilots need site-specific training and authorisation, which the operator takes care of, not you. Arrive this way and there is no drive at all; the car waits at your chalet or hotel for the days you want to go down the valley, dine in another resort or head back to the airport.
The shared final leg: Albertville to Courchevel 1850
All road routes meet at Albertville. From there you follow the Tarentaise valley on the RN90 expressway to Moûtiers, then, according to the town hall, the D90, D915 and D91A up to the resort (Courchevel town hall). The final climb takes just under half an hour on a wide road with hairpins. In heavy snow, chain-up checkpoints are set up and cars without proper equipment can be turned away.
On winter school-holiday Saturdays and around Christmas and New Year, the RN90 becomes the bottleneck for the whole valley. Check the Bison Futé traffic forecast and road conditions on savoie-route.fr before you set off and, if you can, arrive on a Friday or Sunday, early in the morning or in the evening.
Loi Montagne: what it means for a hire car
From 1 November to 31 March, vehicles in France's designated mountain areas must have four winter tyres marked 3PMSF or carry snow chains or snow socks for at least two driven wheels (service-public.gouv.fr). The whole of Savoie is covered. IsyLuxe cars run on winter tyres throughout the cold season; if you also want chains or socks that fit the model's wheels, ask when you book. Country-by-country rules are summarised in our guide Driving to the Alps in winter with a rental car.
Handover: at arrivals or at the chalet?
With IsyLuxe, the car comes to you at the point agreed when you book. The two most popular options for Courchevel:
- At the airport, in the arrivals area. You take the wheel as soon as you land and drive up at your own pace. Give us your flight number and, at Geneva, which sector you will exit from. This is the natural choice for a family with lots of luggage.
- At your chalet or hotel. You go up by transfer or helicopter and the car is waiting in Courchevel 1850, 1650 or 1550. Handy if you land late, on a busy Saturday, or simply do not want to drive after a long flight.
Either way, insurance is included, assistance is available 24/7 and delivery can be immediate. You book the exact model, never "or similar".
Prefer a chauffeur
For the airport run, some guests would rather not drive at all. A private chauffeur is available on request, provided by licensed professionals and speaking the language you choose. You can also mix the two: a chauffeur for the Saturday arrival, and a car delivered to the chalet for the rest of the week.
Parking in Courchevel
Courchevel's public car parks are run by the municipal parking service, with online booking on the official site (Courchevel car parks). In 1850, La Croisette and Bellecôte take bookings for a stay; the others are mostly for season passes. Height limits range from 2 m to 2.40 m depending on the car park, so check before booking with a large SUV. Many chalets and hotels in 1850 have their own garage, often the simplest answer.
Which car for Courchevel?
On the road to Courchevel in winter, all-wheel drive, ground clearance and boot space matter more than power. A 4x4 SUV is the natural pick: Range Rover, Bentley Bentayga, Mercedes-AMG G 63, Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Cayenne or Audi RS Q8. For ski bags, large seven-seat SUVs such as the BMW X7 offer the most room, and the Mercedes V-Class 4MATIC carries up to eight people with their luggage. If your group travels with a lot of kit, tell us when you book and we will point you to the right model. A model not in the fleet may be available on request.
All our mountain-ready models are on luxury SUV hire in Courchevel, and the full range on luxury car hire in Courchevel. A supercar is still possible in winter for the valley drives and the arrival in style, but for the climb itself an SUV is the sensible choice.
