A Tuscan farmhouse holiday rarely ends at a tarmac drive. In the Val d'Orcia, around Pienza, Montalcino and San Quirico, the last few kilometres to many agriturismi are white gravel, sometimes steep, rutted after an autumn storm. The Defender 110 was built for exactly that: all-wheel drive, low-range gearing and ground clearance that the sportier SUVs cannot match.
From Florence it is about 110 km south via the motorway towards Siena, and the 250 hp six-cylinder diesel is relaxed and frugal on the way. Five medium suitcases fit in the back, enough for a family's week, and with its high driving position you see over the hedges to the cypress avenues the valley is famous for. Top speed is 188 km/h, which is irrelevant on roads limited to 130 at most.
In Florence the centre inside the viali is a ZTL controlled by cameras, and the Defender is a tall, wide car for medieval lanes anyway. Winter tyres are fitted in the cold season, so an Apennine trip in January is no problem.
