Reaching the Alps' most exclusive resorts calls for a different car than the coast: here traction, ground clearance and load space matter as much as image.
The SUV remains the obvious choice
For winter in the mountains, a premium SUV with all-wheel drive is the sensible pick: room for ski equipment, stability on slippery surfaces and comfort over the long motorway stretches before the climb.
The destinations
Cortina d'Ampezzo and Madonna di Campiglio remain the Italian benchmarks; Courmayeur combines slopes with proximity to Mont Blanc; St. Moritz in the Engadin and Courchevel in the Three Valleys round out the more international options.
